2D MXenes: layered materials for future energy storage technologies

Ti3C2-X MXenes have emerged as highly promising 2D materials due to their unique laminar morphology and versatile functional applications, particularly in energy storage. However, the scalable and cost-effective production of MXenes critically depends on the synthesis of high-purity MAX phases, which remains challenging under atmospheric pressure and moderate temperatures. This talk will highlight recent efforts on high-purity Ti3AlC2 MAX phase synthesis through a Molten Salt Shielding Solid-State Synthesis (MS5) reaction process under atmospheric pressure conditions. This process significantly influences the interlayer spacing and electrochemical performance of the Ti3C2-F MXene electrode. The incorporation of F-terminal groups notably increases the interlayer spacing, resulting in a surface area of 8.9 m²/g. This expanded structure provides more electroactive sites, enhancing the intercalation of sodium (Na+) ions. This prepared high-purity (i.e., <99 %) Ti3C2 MXene (Ti3C2-F) serves as an advanced anode material for Na-ion batteries, capable of operating at temperatures as low as -120°C. It also demonstrates significant potential for generating green hydrogen in a photocatalytic process and serves as an excellent catalyst for storing hydrogen to a great extent.

Binder-free transition metal phosphate thin film electrodes for storage (supercapacitor) devices

To address the growing global energy demands while reducing dependence on fossil fuels, the development of innovative and efficient energy storage solutions is crucial. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are inherently intermittent, necessitating advanced storage technologies to ensure a stable and continuous power supply. In this context, transition metal (Cobalt, Nickel, Iron, Copper, Manganese, etc.) phosphate (TMP) thin film electrodes have gained significant attention for their potential in storage applications. Their unique electrochemical properties, structural stability, and tunable redox behaviour make them highly efficient for supercapacitor applications with excellent energy and power densities. This talk will highlight recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and functionalization of TMP thin films, focusing on their role as efficient cathode materials for supercapacitors. Strategies for enhancing their performance through compositional tuning, nanostructuring, and heterostructure formation will be discussed. Additionally, insights into the charge storage mechanisms and electrochemical performances will be provided, emphasizing their potential for sustainable and scalable energy storage applications. The discussion aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure-property-performance relationships in TMP thin films, paving the way for their integration into next-generation energy storage technologies.
